Allerede i 1955 startet planene om å få bygget en ny båt. MS Torghatten ble bestilt og bygget på Trosvik Verft i 1957 for 2,5 mill kr. MS Torghatten ble levert 14. desember, og satt i drift den 20.12.1957 på selskapets ukentlige turer mellom Brønnøysund - Namsos og Brønnøysund - Sandnessjøen - Mosjøen. En strekning på vel 205 sjømil. Lokalbåten var en svær investering for selskapet i disse tider da det var kamp om både penger fra staten og påtrykk for å danne et fylkesselskap som innlemmet de lokale ruteselskapene på sjøen og Vesterålens dampskipselskap (VDS) i 1955. Som vi skjønner ble det ikke noe av dette og dampskipselskapene lever i beste velgående om i en annen form. Torghatten Dampskipselskap er nå Torghatten ASA og har flere eierinteresser og driver lokale båtruter flere steder i landet.
Selskapet var helt fra starten av (som andre lokale båtselskap) avhengig årlige tilskudd fra postverket for frakt og ekspedisjon av post. MS Torghatten var i 1957 den største og prektigste båten i drift i distriktet, og den fikk etter hvert ry på seg til å være en av de beste og mest hensiktsmessige fartøy i lokalfarten. På rundturen Brønnøysund - Namsos - Brønnøysund hadde MS Torghatten 63 anløp kan en av styrmennene om bord, Tore Åsberg fortelle.
I postlugaren nr 1, mars 2007 side 9 leser vi at "Postmesteren i Brønnøysund opplyser i brev av 4. desember 1962 at postekspedisjonen Sør - Helgeland, Litra A (Danielsen 5) blir utført av MS Torghatten i ruten Brønnøysund - Bindal - Namsos - Brønnøysund."
