”Martin i Odden” kjenner de fleste i Alstahaug og Leirfjord. I en årrekke var han matros på B/F ”Sandnessjøen” som gikk i rute mellom Leinesodden og Sandnessjøen. Martin Edvardsen bodde like ved ferjeleiet, og det var nok bostedet som ga han kallenavnet. Bildet av Martin på ferjelemmen er tatt i 1974.
Bare to år senere var det full krangel om plassering av nytt og større ferjekai. Trafikken hadde økt så mye at HTS ville sette inn større pendelferje, og den ble for stor for det trange sundet. Nytt ferjeleie ble bygd sør for det gamle, og den skjermede vågen ble tatt i bruk til småbåthavn. Det nye ferjeleiet er også nedlagt; Helgelandsbrua har overtatt trafikken på Rv 17.
