Dette var en gammel husmannsplass som ble tatt opp av Sofus Nilsen fra Budalen på Strandlandet.(Austvågøy) Far hans, Nils Jakobsa, flytta til Husby der han fikk seg husmannsplass. Sofus var gift med Henriette Olsen født på Haukenes, Langøya. De bygde seg hus og fjøs og fikk omsider for til fire kyr. De hadde sju barn. Da Sofus Nilsen døde i 1937 falt plassen tilbake til hovedbruket. Kona til Sofus døde i 1936. Birkelund ble kjøpt av Johan Horn fra Buksnes i Lofoten. Han var kaiformann på ekspedisjonen hos Edith Frederiksen.

Forandringer på huset, hva slags og når: Restaurert satt i stand på 1990-2000 tallet, i regi av nåværende eier Jan Petter Olsen.
