Louis Philippe levde en tid av sitt liv i landflyktighet i Måsøy nær Nordkapp. Han ble valgt til fransk konge etter julirevolusjonen i 1830, men det var urolige tider, og han måtte gå av som følge av revolusjonen i 1848. Dermed ble han Frankrikes siste konge.
Gjennom alle årene holdt han kontakt med sine venner i Finnmark og sendte som takk for gjestfriheten en bronsebyste av seg selv med La Recherche-ekspedisjonen i 1838–1840. Den sto lenge i storstuen hos handelsmannen Buck i Havøysund, der den ble delvis ødelagt under andre verdenskrig. Restene finnes på Måsøy museum.
Som erstatning for denne byste sendte den franske stat en ny marmorbyste som ble avduket på Nordkapp 02. juli 1959. Bysten stod gjennom årene på flere plasser i Nordkapphallen og tidligere også i område utenfor hallen.
