Arkitekturen i Haugesund preges av hjørnehus i tre med tårn. De ble alminnelige i Haugesund allerede fra 1890-årene.
I dag er det 70 tårn i byen og Haugesund kalles gjerne for "tårnbyen". Mange av tårnhusene ligger i området Skjoldaveien og Tuhauggata. Men du kan også se tårnhus andre steder i byen, blant annet på Risøy og Hasseløy. I 2021 dokumenterte Haugalandmuseet alle tårnhus i Haugesund. Fotografiet inngår i denne dokumentasjonen.
Mange av tårnhusene er tegnet av arkitekt Eiinar Halleland. Han var født i Haugesund i 1860., var utdannet ingeniør i Trondheim og arkitekt fra Hannover i Tyskland. Fra 1885 arbeidet han i Tyskland før han vendte hjem til Haugesund i 1889. Han var Haugesunds første arkitekt, og hans arkitektur har satt sitt preg på byen. De første årene var han inspirert av historismen. Historismens ideal var å markere hjørnene i en bykvadratur av typen som i Haugesund
med tårn. Halleland utviklet et vidt repertoar av småtårn på sine alminnelige hjørnehus. Fra tidlig på 1900 tallet tegnet han bygg i jugendstil. Tårnmotivet preger også hjørnehusene fra jugendperioden.
