De to nærmeste fartøyene på bildet er SMS Preussen (1873) og SMS Friedrich der Große (1874), to tyske Panzerschiffe (ex. Panzerfregatte), eng; ironclad turret ship. I bakgrunnen, t.h. i bildet, som høyst sannsynlig er tatt i juli 1890 i.f.m. Keiser Wilhelm II sitt besøk i Kristiania, sees to "panzerkorvetten" (eng; central citadel ironclad) av Sachsen klassen med fire skorsteiner plassert som i en firkant.
