Billedlottoen er en del av en større samling pedagogiske leker fra Hegdehaugen barnehage. Lekene er laget av givers mor, Helle Hopland, i samarbeid med med hennes søster Ellen Elkjær. Helle Hopland (født 31.05.1921) var flyktning i Sverige under deler av andre verdenskrig. Hun utdannet seg til førskolelærer i Stockholm, der senere nobelprisvinner Alva Myrdal var rektor. Hopland vendte tilbake til sin hjemby Oslo etter krigen, og begynte å arbeide i Hegdehaugen barnehage.
Giver (Siri Hopland) forteller at det var få daghjem (som barnehagene het dengang) etter andre verdenskrig, og liten eller ingen mulighet til å få tak i ferdige leker og annet materiell beregnet på barn. Sammen med sin yngre søster, Ellen Elkjær, som var god til å tegne, fikk Helle laget puslespill og andre pedagogiske leker som barna kunne bruke.
