De ovale, skålformede spennene er støpt i bronse. De er bygget opp som et ovalt, halvrundt skall over ei nål i jern. Formen minner om et skilpaddeskall og de blir derfor også kalt «Tortoise- shaped brooches». Spennene er blitt selve kjennetegnet på vikingtidas kvinnedrakt. De var et naturlig tilbehør til kvinnenes antrekk som besto av en serk med en fotsid overkjole. Man festet selene over skuldrene sammen med forstykket av kjolen ved hjelp av to skålformede spenner; en på hver side av brystet. I praksis var det spennene som holdt antrekket sammen.
Det finnes mange varianter av skålspenner. Både størrelsen, mønsteret og stilen endret seg med moten i alle de århundrene spennene var i bruk. Felles for dem er at de gjerne er dekorert med ulike varianter av dyreornamentikk og geometriske figurer. De kunne være forsølvet, forgylt eller ha annen type dekorelementer. Vi gjenfinner dem oftest som gravfunn i kvinnegraver.
Denne spennen har trolig blitt brukt sammen med en til, tilsvarende, som et sett til en kvinnedrakt. De er av en enkel type og kan ha vært moderne på 800-tallet. (Tekst til nettartikkel om Glomdalsmuseets skålspenner, skrevet av Anne Kathrine Bakstad)
