Snusdåsen har tilhørt Hans Chrystie (1720-1798) som var sønn av David Chrystie (1693-1736). David Chrystie kom i 1717 fra Skottland til Brevik. Her bygget han opp en betydelig trelastforretning. Denne overtok Hans Chrystie, han var i tillegg postmester.
David Chrystie bygget Chrystiegården som ble flyttet til og oppført på Norsk Folkemuseum.
