- Ordet 'hyre' betegner de ytre plagg som fiskere og sjøfolk har på seg i arbeidet til sjøs. Overplagg i eldre tid var skinnstakk, skinntrøye eller sjøkofte av vadmel. I nyere tid var overplaggene trøye av seilduk, oljelerret, plastikk eller gummi. Bukser i eldre tid var av skinn eller seilduk (cannifas), i nyere tid av oljelerret, gummi eller plastikk (Trætteberg). Skinnbukse var i bruk på hele 1800-tallet, og de var ofte innsmurt med tran eller ble barka. Ei velsmurt skinnbrok kunne vare i 3-4 år. Geiteskinn ble brukt i Trøndelag da det var et mykt skinn og passe tykt. Denne buksa er impregnert med tran og tjære, og kommer fra gården Halsen.
