Det japanske selskapet Akai, etablert i 1927, har produsert en rekke elektrisk lydutstyr, blant annet mikrofoner.
Mikrofoner konverterer akustiske signaler til elektrisk energi eller signaler som kan forsterkes. Det finnes mange typer mikrofoner med forskjellige egenskaper og fasonger. Felles for mikrofoner er at de består av en membran, som settes i svingning av lydbølgene, en omformer, som omdanner svingningene i membranen til elektriske signaler, og en kapsel som beskytter de nevnte elementene, utformingen på kapselen kan kontrollere retningen lyden fanges fra og respons på mikrofonen.
Akai ADM-40 er en dynamisk mikrofon. Dynamiske mikrofoner består av en tynn metallmembran som setter en spole i bevegelse inne i et magnetfelt, der det dannes en flyt av strøm som omformes til elektriske signaler. Det krever mye energi å flytte på membranen, noe som resulterer i at dynamiske mikrofoner har litt mindre frekvensrespons enn andre mikrofoner. Dynamiske mikrofoner tåler som regel høyt lydtrykk, og brukes ofte tett på lydkilden. Dynamiske mikrofoner er billige, robuste og gode, og derfor de vanligste typene.
