Født i Klepp på Jæren. Regnet seg som norsk-amerikaner. Fotograferte både i Norge og i USA. Tok bilder på Jæren av bønder, familier, deres bygninger og livet på gårdene, og drog så over til USA (på billigste måte, dette var i''Linjekrigens tid"). Her oppsøkte han deres slektninger som kjøpte bildene fra hjemstedene. Så gjentok han den samme prosessen, fotograferte deres hjem etc. drog tilbake igjen og solgte bildene til slekten i Norge. Denne skytteltrafikken gjentok han med få års mellomrom i 1898, 1900, 1904 og senere, og han skal ha krysset Atlanteren ca. 30 ganger på denne måten. I 1926 etablerte han seg i Skudeneshavn. Dette firmaet ble i 1938 overtatt av Karl Stava. Endel av Thus panoramanegativer fra Norge befinner seg på Sjøfartsmuseet i Stavanger.

Av dei mange eldre Rogalands-fotografane har utan tvil Rasmus Pederson Thu den mest allsidige produksjonen. Han var og fotografen med fleire titlar og fleire signaturtypar. Rasmus var friluftsfotograf før Anders B. Wilse tok i bruk denne tittelen i Norge, og namnet sitt skreiv han på fleire måtar; ”Rasmus P. Thu” før han flytte til USA i 1883, ”R. Pedersen” medan han budde i USA i åra 1883-1888 og ”R. Pedersen, Stavanger” som fotograf på Jæren i 1889. I 1890-åra og seinare i livet skreiv han seg ”R. P. Thu”. På fotograf-stempel frå 1900-talet og trykt på postkort står det nemleg: ”R. P. Thu, Stavanger”.
Nokre år seinare starta den omfattande panoramabilet-produksjonen. I 1921-1922 tok han fleire slike i Stavanger-distriktet. Utstyret hadde han nok kjøpt i USA. Nokre av bileta frå Rogaland vart trykte lokalt i Stavanger som tre samanbretta postkort, alle med formatet 9 cm x 14 cm. I åra 1922-1923 reiste Thu over store delar av Sørlandet og Vestlandet. Han tok panoramabilete frå bygder og gardar langs heile kysten. Det er ikkje kjent på kva måte han produserte og selde bileta. Familien hans har bevart mange små kontaktkopiar av panoramabileta, kleba opp på albumblad. Desse var kanskje reklame- eller demonstrasjonsbilete. Thu tok særleg mange panoramabilete på Karmøy, både før og etter at han og andre kona hans, Anna f. Axelsen, flytte dit i 1926. Thu dreiv då vanleg atelierfotografering i småbyen Skudeneshavn. Dette vart siste etappen på ein lang og variert fotografkarriere. Då han og kona flytte tilbake til Stavanger i 1938, selde han atelieret med negativarkivet til fotograf Karl Stava. Arkivet erksisterer ikkje i Skudeneshavn i dag.
