Orkerød barnehjem på Jeløya var opprettet og drevet av Den Norske Frimurerorden fra 1897.
Kong Oscar II var til stede og innviet barnehjemmet. Kongen ble der en stund og tok seg tid til omvisning og en prat med barna. Lunsj ble servert i et telt i hagen. Kvelden ble avsluttet på Refsnes gods hvor kongen og dronningen deltok i et større middagsselskap. I åpningstalen sa kongen blant annet: “Ikke alt som kan kle sig i filatropiens drakt er barmhjertighet. Men ingen barnmhjertighetsgjerning kan være større og mere nødvendig enn den å vise barmhjertighet mot de kommende slekter, og å skape lykkelige livsvilkår for dem. Så står vi da i dag her for å innvie dette hjem for barn, som vil skal opdra til kristne og gode borgere i samfundet. Men det sier jeg, at hvad vi her har gjort, er ikke av oss, ikke av ordenen, men Gud alene tilkommer æren”.
Kongen var ankommet Moss 2 dager tidligere i kongeskipet Drott som lå til kai i kanalen. Han hadde deltatt på regatta arrangert av Kristiania Seilforening. Oscar II var svært glad i Moss og var ofte i byen, både som gjest og hovedperson. Han var ofte innom kurbadet i Værla og bodde sommeren 1878 med familien på gårdene Rosnes og Orkerød på Jeløy, til stor glede for byens innbyggere.
