- Post mortem-fotografering, det å ta bilder av personer som nylig har avgått ved døden, var en vanlig praksis fra fotografiets barndom på 1800- tallet og fram til midten av forrige århundre. Fotografiene hadde en tydelig minnefunksjon. Etter hvert utviklet det seg en særegen estetikk rundt slike bilder. Blomsterdekorasjoner og andre symbolladede elementer sammen med fotografens fremstilling bidro til å skape et forskjønnet bilde av døden.
