Fotografiet er fra "De Schreinerske samlinger" som tilhører Anatomisk Institutt ved Universitetet i Oslo.
Alette Schreiner (1873-1951) og Kristian Emil Schreiners (1874-1957) navn er nært knyttet til utviklingen av instituttet og av fysisk antropologi i Norge, en deskriptiv virksomhet basert på studier og målinger av mennesketyper. De studerte både levende personer og skjelettmateriale fra ulike deler av landet, ikke minst fra samisk område. Store samlinger ble bygget opp ved instituttet i perioden kalt "den Schreinerske æra".
Konsekvensen av den fysisk-antropologiske måten å tenke og klassifisere på skapte et forskermiljø som rommet store spenninger i inn- og utland. Ekteparet Schreiner tok som sentrale personer etter hvert avstand fra at konkrete ideologier gjennom faget søkte legitimitet fra vitenskapen for egen virksomhet.
Fotografiene i serien her er fra en undersøkelse foretatt i Setesdal i Aust-Agder antatt 1924 blant befolkningen i et særegent bygdesamfunn før industrialisering og ytre påvirkning skapte endringer. Et utvalg menn, kvinner og barn er fotografert, gjerne poserende fra ulike vinkler. Personene er navngitt og nummerert i henhold til presentasjonen av forskningsresultatene.
