Nordkappfestival med program i Honningsvåg: 24.-30. juni 1956
Åpning av Nordkappveien på Nordkapp-platået: lørdag, 30. juni 1956, kl. 22.30
Samferdselsminister Kolbjørn Varmann foretok den offisielle åpningen. Kommunen forskotterte veiprosjektet med 1 million kroner. Dette fremskyndte fullførelsen med 10-15 år. Det var en rekke inviterte gjester fra både inn og utland, bl.a. representanter fra Finnmark Fylkeskommune, fra vennskapsbyene og Lord Fraser of North Cape. Han fikk sitt adelsnavn under krigen p.g.a. dyktig ledelse av operasjonen i Ishavet, når det tyske slagskipet "Scharnhorst" ble senket. Navnet var gitt ham med tillatelse av kong Haakon. Det var korsang og korpsmusikk under åpningen.
En Sunbeam Talbot med sjåførene Gunnar Fadum og Per Malling var den første offisielle bil til Nordkapp etter veiåpningen. Bilen hadde kjørt nonstop Lindesnes-Nordkapp på tre dager og var KNAs (Kongelig Norsk Automobilforbunds) propaganda-ekspedisjon. Strekningen Hammerfest - Honningsvåg ble tilbakelagt med Hurtigruta. Fadum og Malling vant i 1955 Rally Monte Carlo med en lignende bil. Norges eneste seier i dette legendariske rally.
