Suzanne begins by reflecting on the questions regarding whether or not she has heard about the Cold War, if it has affected her or someone she knows, or if it can affect in the future. She was affected by the Cold War as a child and believes it can affect in the future (to which her husband, also in the booth states “if there is a new one”).
Suzanne goes on to talk about her childhood in the 1960s, when she was in the third grade, they had nuclear drills in school. They had to hide under their desks, to which she states, “as if that would protect us”. Later on during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the school made them pray to not be annihilated by nuclear weapons.
Her husband goes on to talk about their background, both growing up in New York, but from different boroughs. He had the same experience in public school, where he also was told to hide under his desk, cover his head, and wait for a while.
