THE SUPPORT COMPANIES - FJORDBOTNEIDET

Both the Trønder Battalion and the Alta Battalion brought support companies with horses, to carry equipment, over Fjordbotneidet:

·         The Trønder Battalion:      86 horses

·         The Alta Battalion:             112 horses

During the Alta Battalions advance over Fjordbotneidet, between the 24th and 27th of April, the support companies had their bivouac close by. There were vast amounts of snow in the area, and they dug stables into the piles of snow in the surrounding valleys. The support companies were hit by an air strike on the 29th of April by German aircrafts stationed at Værnes airport in Trøndelag. The snow stables caved, and the horses that were not killed instantly, suffocated under the snow. No soldiers were killed.

However, in the area just south of the support companies, where the Alta Battalion was located, one soldier was killed and one was injured. The deceased soldiers name was Alfon Paul Gamst from Sørøya in Loppa.
