I 1163/64 vart Magnus Erlingsson krona i Kristskyrkja på Holmen i Bergen. Magnus var då bere sjul eller åtte år gammal. Han var son av lendmann Erling Skakke frå Etne og kongsdottera Kristin, dotter av Sigurd Jorsalfare. Det er denne hendinga som skal ha vore bakgrunnen for at Erling grunnla eit kloster på Halsnøy.
Augustinarordenen, som klosteret var knytt til, skal ifølgje tradisjonen stamma frå St. Augustin sin bispegard i Hippo i Algerie og er basert på Augustins ordensreglel. Han førskreiv felles eigedom, bustad og arbeid.
Halsnøy Kloster var det rikaste av dei norske klostera då det blei nedlagt i 1537. Det åtte då gardar og gardpartar med leigeinntekter på mein enn 660 lauper smør, noko som svarar til 10 tonn. Godset haddee tyngdepunkt i Sunnhordland, men det hadde også gardar i Ryfylke og på Jæren.
Ved det store godssalet på 1750-talet kjøpte futen i Sunnhordland klostergarden, som etter matrikkelskylda var mellom dei største godsa i Hordaland. Halsnøy Kloster eller berre Kloster var ikkje ein herregard i tydinga setegard for ein adelsmann. Det var likevel mange adelsmenn som hadde sete der, då dei hadde klostergodset i len frå kongen. Dei første generasjonane i Juel-famielien var embetsmenn meir enn gardbrukarar. Det var først med løytnant Andreas Juel at ei større nydyrking vart sett i gong og garden sitt potensial vart utnytta.
Klostergarden høyrer framleis til Juel-familien.
