Et huljern eller en skjølp, et spesialredskap de hadde ombord i hvalbåtene. Skjølpen ble brukt til å lage hull i hvalens hale, for å få feste til stroppen (rumpestroppen) eller slepetau.
"Straks hvalen er langs hvalbåtsida blir den pumpet opp med pressluft og påsatt flagg, lys, radiosender og radarreflektor. Rundt halerota legges en rumpestropp med to kork-vøler i god avstand. Så blir halefinnene stusset og hvalen merket med hvalbåtens nummer før linene kuttes så nær harpunene som man kan nå. Flagghvalen forlates og er nå bøyebåtens ansvar. Det gjelder å være rask, så man kan ta opp jakten på flokken igjen".
Giver har "pusset opp" skjølpen, både skaft og blad er pusset ned og lakkert. Han har også boret hull øverst og sammenkoplet skjølpen og flensekniven v.h.a. en wire. Skjølpen er sannsynligvis laget av Arne Abrahamsen Fevang, f. 1885 - 1980 ca. Fevangsmeden var kjent for sine kvalitetsredskaper.
