--- The ship is Pesca's transport ship 'Calpean Star' (ex-'Highland Chieftain' from UK Royal Mail Lines) and replaced the old transport ship 'Harpon II'. Calpe Shipping Co. Ltd. was registred in Gibraltar. She first visited Grytviken (South Georgia) on 20 April 1959. She then sailed to Liverpool where she arrived in July 1959 (after engine failures). In the autumn of 1959 she returned to Grytviken where refurbishing work started on engines and exterior of the ship. I think the picture may have been taken during this period. Also note the 'sperm whale oil' barrels in the foreground, which tell us the Blue Whales had gone commercially extinct and whalers had moved on to the next species of whale (few Sperm Whales were taken in the early days of whaling, their oil could not be mixed with that of baleen whales). In February 1960 'Calpean Star' sailed around the corner to Husvik Harbour (also South Georgia) and upon her return to Grytviken, she hit a submerged rock, on 15 March 1960. This was the start of another series of troublesome events for 'Calpean Star'. (Info fra Lex van Groningen 2017). Fra Nordmøre museums fotosamlinger.
