Apparatet er et slags klimakammer, som brukes til å teste aldring. Prøvene blir utsatt for kraftig lys, fuktighet og eventuelt vann/saltsprøyt. Hensikten er å etterligne forholdene utendørs, men slik at aldringen går mye raskere.
