Every member of NATO borders on the seas and is dependent on them for their economic maintenance in peace in their military reinforcement and survival in time of war. Admiral Jerauld Wright, United States Navy, Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic, is resonsible for insuring that North America and Europe are strongly tied together by their sea communications at all times. To facilitate the smooth functioning of various naval commands of NATO nations, a huge naval manauver, "Operation Strike Back" was held in the North Atlantic and Artic waters in the fall of 1957. More than 100 vessels from various countries, including the nuclear powered US submarine Nautilus took part in the ten-day exercise.
Nine British and United States aircraft carriers were among the naval vessels which took part in the execcises... the strongest striking fleet assembled since World War II. In this photograpgh, the giant US Forrestal is refueling from a fleet oiler alongside. Planes can take off and land on deck even during this operation.
