The Lighting aircraft of No. 5 Squadron, one of which is seen here touching down after a competition sortie, won the Hudlestone Trophy while the Ground Radar Control Station at RAF Patrington took the Bruniaus Trophy.
The competition is staged between the air forces of Belgium, Holland, West Germany and the United States Air Force in Europe, with United Kingdom Defence Area "guest" competitors from Britain, France and Denmark. Each force carries out attacking and defensive "operations" observed by a panel of international judges.
Split seconds count in the speed of interceptions, the location of attacking forces and response to changing situations in this kind of compatition, which tests the skill of men on the ground and in the air and the technical excellence and reliability of their equipment to the limit. To win their trophy, the Lightning pilots flew by day and night making attacks and interceptions at high and low levels and often at supersonic speeds.
The mach 2 Lightnings can carry a range of weapons, allowing them to attack or defend with great effect. Their performance is such that they are credited with transonic speeds while flying vertically upwards.
