The first British-assembled multi-role combat aircraft, the MRCA, makes its initial flight form the British Aircraft Corp. airfield at Warton in Lancashire, north-west England. The aircraft was flown by Paul Millett, chief test pilot of the BAC military aircraft divison, who flew the first West German-assembled MRCA, '01', in Germany in august this year.
Described recently by Britain's Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Wilson, as 'one of the wonder birds of avoation', the MRCA is being developed by Britain, West Germany and Italy to form the backbone of their air forces by the end of the decade. The aircraft, of witch about 800 are to be built, is powered by two of Europe's most advanced aero-engines - Turbo-Union RB-199-34Rs - three spool reheated turbofans fitted with thrust reversers.
This is the second of nine prototype MRCAs whitch, in the RAF, will replace the Vulcan and the Buccaneer, and later the Phantom. Four are being assembled in England, three in Germany and two in Italy. The prototypes will be followed by six pre-series aircraft which will be flown by service pilots at the Goverment test establishments in the three countries.
