Tekst på baksiden av fotografiet:
"The German naval raid on Spitsbergen.
On the 8th September last, a large German naval force, comprising the Tirpitz and Scharnhorst with a destroyer escort, raided the lonely Artic outpost of Spitsbergen, 10 degrees from the North Pole, defended only by a Norwegian garrison some 100 strong. The two principal mining settelments, Barentsburg ang Long-year City, were bombarded and set on fire, and landing parties put ashore. The garrison fought back against ships and men until their ammunition was spent, then all but a few evaded capture by withdrawing into the mountains. After razing the settlements to the ground, destroing even the church at Long-year City, the Germans ingloriously retired to their hide-out in Altenfjord, North Norway.
Carrying back the wounded: Norwegian soliders returning from the mountain with a wounded comrade to the fire-scorched settlement of Barenstsburg.
London, 5.1.44."
