  • This painting is almost certainly by George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson (1806-1884) and shows the vessel signaling for a pilot off Cork Harbour in Ireland. The entrance to Cork is under the bowsprit. The picture probably shows the same ship in three positions, a most unusual depiction by this late date.
  • I agree with Charles Omell, but I would like to add Atkinsons sons Richard Peterson Atkinson (1839 - 1881) and Robert Peird Atkinson (1841 - 1917) as possible painters. There is an identical painting from 1873, signed R. P. Atkinson, which can be either of the sons, but other signed paintings by Robert clearly shows that it is his signature. This painting is owned by Grimstad Seamens Club.
