  • I believe this painting to be by William Daniel Penny (1834-1924) and not by "N D Perry". Penny usually signs "W D Penny" and it would be worth checking the signature. Penny was born in Caistor,Lincolnshire in 1834 and by 1869 was living in Hull. Addresses in Hull include 67 Francis Street circa 1868-1878, Cottingham Road circa 1882-1889, and 13 Newland Avenue circa 1892-1897. He is listed in local directories as "marine painter" and was still painting as late as 1910. Around the turn of the century he moved to Aldbrough and acquired a pub called the "Artists Rest". He married a girl called Hester and they had six children, all but the eldest born in Hull. The Town Docks Museum in Hull has 14 of Penny's pictures, mostly ship portraits.
