The lion doesn't face the pole. Perhaps to recall Christian Frederik and 1814. It also carries a fighting axe (which is slightly different from a medieval Danish axe used before on this sort of symbols, but I guess anyways it was done like this to refer to those christian-nation-forming times of Lagabøte, and of course, to St Olav. It is very different from the curved Halberd used in Danish times and in 1814). All symbols of authority by force.
