Gjermund Seljestad tok til med å bygga Hotel Folgefond i 1892, men døydde av lungebetennelse før han var ferdig. Broren Nils Øvregård Seljestad bygde hotellet ferdig i 1894. Byggmeister Fyksen frå Kvam sette det opp (Same Fyksen/Fixen som bygde Hotel Hardanger?). Seljestad hadde sendt døtrene Torbjørg og Madli frå Seljestad til Skottland for at dei skulle læra språk og finare matlaging. Dei var også i USA. Dei to søstrene kom heim då faren døydde, Torbjørg var berre 23 år då ho fekk ansvaret for Hotel Folgefonn. Ho og syster Madli dreiv hotellet saman i starten. Seks hestar måtte dei ha disponible i skysstrafikken. Seinare overtok Madli og mannen, og dreiv hotellet til dei reiste til Amerika i 1902. Ola Thorstensen kjøpte hotellet av Madli, men frå 1903 hadde Torbjørg skøyte på garden. Thorstensen selde garden til J. E. Berg i 1918, men måtte ta det att i ei tvangsauksjon, og selde vidare til Torbjørg same året. Då Torbjørg døydde i 1951, overtok sonen Gjermund, og dreiv det saman med syster Marta. Bygget er i dag i privat eige, og er det eldste huset i sveitserstil att i kommunen.
