- Namnet Odda er opphaveleg nytta om landtunga mellom sjøen og elva Opo. Namnet vitnar om høg alder, eldre enn folkevandringstida. I urnordisk tid, 600-700 e.Kr. har namnet fått si endelege form etter å ha følgt den språklege utviklinga frå urgermansk gjennom urnordisk til norrønt. Namnet og forma Odda kjem av ei dativform i eintal av norrøn Oddi - odde, nes, landtunge. Det siktar til Almerket, området mellom Opo og sjøen. Norr. oddi var eit svakt hankjønnsord som enda på -a i dativ. Derfor heiter det Odda, liksom ein har Haga og Bakka. På gamle bilde ser ein ofte at det er skrive "Odde i Hardanger", noko som er ei misskriving frå dansketida.
