Under den nordiske skogkonferansen i Finland i 1970 ble nordiske skogbrukere kjent med at finnene hadde innført en ny metode for produksjon av dekkrotplanter til kulturarbeider i finske skoger. Plantene ble dyrket fram i sekskantete japanske papirpotter med noe varierende diameter. Papirpottene, som ble levert sammenlimt i en struktur som minte om den vi finner i bikuber, ble plassert på plastbrett med perforert botn. Disse fungerte som "handteringsenheter" i plantesklene. Papirpottene ble fylt med ei blanding av torv og gjødsel. Deretter ble det sådd ett eller et par frø i hver hylse. Til denne prosessen hadde finnene utviklet såmaskiner. Brettene med tilsådde papirpotter ble satt i plastveksthus, der de etter ett år hadde oppnådd samme størrelse som toårige frilandsplanter. Dermed kunne papirpottene, med de perforerte plastbrettene som underlag, stables i stålstativer med hyller og kjøres til kulturfeltene med lastebiler. Der ble plantiga utført med planterør, som dette. Dyrkinga av dekkrotplanter i papirpotter innebar en betydelig effektivisering av produksjonen i skogplanteskolene. Også utplanting med planterør framsto som mindre tids- og arbeidskrevende enn de etablerte metodene ved planting av barrotplanter med ulike hakketyper. Derfor var om lag halvparten av de skogplantene som ble omsatt i Finland omkring 1970 papirpotteplanter. Også i andre nordiske land ble det gjort forsøk med slike planter, i Norge blant annet i Hurdal i 1973. På denne tida startet imidlertid også forsøkene med den såkalte «Kopparfors-metoden» - produksjon av dekkrotplanter i plastbrett med påfølgende utplanting ved hjelp av hullpiper. Slike «pluggplanter» ble raskt populære i Norge, og produksjonen av skogplanter i papirpotter fikk følgelig aldri noe stort omfang her til lands.

Fotografiet er tatt på ei markberedt hogstflate med Hurdalssjøen i bakgrunnen. Plantøren hette Aakre. Han deltok i arbeidsstudier som det driftstekniske miljøet ved Norsk institutt for skogforskning utførte i 1970-åra, da det ble lansert flere nye skogplantetyper som innbød til litt ulike utplantingsteknikker. Skogplanteproduksjon i japanske papirpotter ble en del norske forstmenn kjent med under den nordiske skogkongressen i Finland i 1970. Finnene hadde eksperimentert med slike potter, i varierende diametere, smale for furu og noe videre for gran. Pottene ble fylt med ei blanding av torv og gjødsel, og det var utviklet en maskin som kunne så skogfrø i pottene med stor effektivitet. Plantene ble drevet fram i plastveksthus, der de nådde ønsket størrelse i løpet av én sesong. I 1970 ble halvparten av skogplantene i Finland levert i slike papirpotter. Norske fagfolk som hadde fått et innblikk i den fornyelsen av skogplanteproduksjonen som hadde skjedd i Finland ønsket å prøve det samme i Norge, noe dette fotografiet gjenspeiler. Utstyret som ble brukt i forbindelse med utplantinga var også finsk. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt sto plantør Aakre på en markberedt jordflekk, kledd i dongeribukser og rutete flanellskjorte, og med gummistøvler på beina. Han bar ei plastbalje med papirpotteplanter på venstre hoftekam med støtte fra ei reim over høyre skulder. I høyre hånd holdt han planterøret (finsk modell som ble kalt Pottiputki) med den nebbformete spissen mot bakken. Plantøren var klar til å tråkke den sju-åtte cemtimeter ned og åpne «nebbet» for dermed å opparbeide et plantehull, slippe ei papirpotteplante ned i røret, heve det og tråkke litt rundt planta for å komprimere jorda. Dette fotografiet inngår i ei samling der fotografene var driftsteknisk orienterte medarbeidere i Det norske skogforsøksvesen, som i 1972 skiftet navn til Norsk institutt for skogforskning (NISK). Bildene er stort sett tatt under befaringer og forsøksprosjekter som dette skogteknologiske forskingsmiljøet organiserte eller var delaktige i perioden fra 1947 til slutten av 1980-åra. Samlinga, som består av en del tematisk orienterte permer med innlimte kopier samt film (negativer og fargedias) og opptaksjournaler, ble overdratt fra Institutt for skog og landskap ved Universitetet for miljø- og biovitenskap (UMB) til Norsk Skogmuseum (NSM) høsten 2008. Etter fusjonen med Norges veterinærhøgskole i 2014 giverne av arkivet skiftet navn til «Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet» (NMBU). Kontrakt om overdragelsen av materialet finnes i Norsk Skogmuseums avtalearkiv. Dette motivet er fra en perm merket «Skogkulturabeider 241 Planting, manuelt».
